Die Design & Manufacturing for an Automotive Part

At B&J Specialty, Inc. we pride ourselves on our advanced knowledge of molds and dies, as well as our state-of-the-art computer systems and CNC machinery. When a customer in the automotive industry needed a 4-post blank die manufactured, we were a perfect fit to build this specialty die. Consulting 2D CAD drawings for the customer’s specifications, our engineering team helped procure the necessary high strength low alloy steel and design the optimal die. To process this order, we employed our Lagun manual milling machine, Makino V55 CNC machine, Okamoto surface grinder, wire electrical discharge machine (EDM) and our coordinate measuring machine (CMM). We using our milling, turning, grinding, bending, welding, water jet cutting, laser cutting, and electrical discharge machining services on the steel to create parts with dimensions of .071” by 6.4525” by 42.418”. The overall die dimensions were die L-R 90”, die F-B 67”, and shut height 27”. These parts were made with tolerances of +/- 0.008” for the part and +/- .0001” for the tooling.
After manufacturing, these products were heat treated, stress relieved, painted, and assembled. A stacking dimple was introduced to eliminate vacuum in the post process, which involved robot pick and place. These products went through dimensional inspection and were delivered to our customer in Indiana within 28 weeks.
