Mold Design & Manufacturing for a Prototype Overmold

At B&J Specialty, Inc. our in-depth knowledge of both die engineering and injection molding technology makes us the preferred partner for many prototype development projects. When combined with our flexible working environment, we are able to meet complex requirements under very tight deadlines. In less than 5 weeks time, we were able to help a customer go from prototype to production for the overmolded part shown here.

Working with the part specifications, our engineering team used state-of-the-art modeling software to design the tooling and execute performance analysis/process simulation to determine the feasibility of using an overmolding process. Upon verification of insert fit, we fabricated the tooling using a variety of techniques, including laser cutting, wire EDM, milling and grinding. Featuring dimensions of 8-7/8” in length, 13-1/2" in width, and 10” in height, we fabricated the tooling to within precision ± 0.0005” tolerances, and with a refined SPI B3 finish that would give the part a slightly glossy shine and very good release.
